When the people in the neighborhood began putting out their Halloween decorations before October 1st, I knew we were in trouble and had to get on the decorating ball! My mom told me about Halloween lanterns she had seen in a magazine that were just decoupaged jars. So, . . .
The week before Halloween C and I were invited to a party by some people in the neighborhood we know from church. Costumes required. Well, easily embarrassed C, was not easily talked into any sort of costume. I suggested everything that I thought he would go for, and going as the rocket scientist that you are in real life doesn't qualify!!! In the end we settled for a "Lightning and Thunder 'Cloud'," punny we know! So $20 later,
Once the lanterns were lining our front walk and the party was out of the way we were ready for trick-or-treaters to come our way.
Before Halloween we started asking around to figure out what to expect for trick-or-treaters. While our neighborhood is not all families with kids, we had seen a pool full of kids this summer and we braced for big numbers. Our friends in the neighborhood told us to be prepared for 2 hours of door bell ringing and 2-3 big bags of candy from Sam's/Costco. We had 200 of the little "Bats and Jacks" Halloween pretzels bags ready to give out (hoping to fight childhood obesity one trick-or-treater at a time, and being the teacher I am, ward off that terrible Halloween candy, "But, Miss, I don't want to work," funk come Monday morning). At 6:03 the door bell rang, trick-or-treater #1, and almost 2 hours later at 7:56 we wished our 159th trick-or-treater a Happy Halloween, and the night was quiet from then on.
We'll chalk this up to a successful 1st Halloween in the neighborhood. Until next time we'll try to restrain the lightning and thunder from Cloud 9! ;)
